Dec 08, 2017 · Although RT-N66U has decent firmware, there are still better and more performant options like open-source firmware built by volunteers and communities. Asuswrt-Merlin is good example how different focus on firmware may save router from going to recycle bin. Before abandoning old router, try out if issues are not coming down to router software. Download ASUS RT-N66U (Ver.B1) Router Firmware 3.0.0.4.374.2050 (Firmware) I ran that sucker 24/7 non-stop for 6 years straight and rebooted it less than 3 times! It still works, but I wanted a faster wifi connection and firmware with better VPN support. Enter the RT-N66U with Merlin firmware. Great throughput, rock solid reliability for the past few months, and the option to flash Tomato, Merlin, or DDWRT firmware. The RT-N66U and RT-N66W are the same except U has a black case and W has a white case. The RT-N66R is the same as the RT-N66U. It is simply a repackage for retail sale. Please notice that due to Broadcom BCM47xx driver limitations wireless support is sketchy.
