Although they do offer a full VPN service, their main focus is providing security and anonymity for torrenting. This is an okay choice for a VPN. However, we don’t think ‘okay’ is enough. Maybe proxy went down or something (doesn't sound like they had a kill switch setup). 99% sure the actual letter they received is from a copyright troll & was simply forwarded over to the user in question. It brings up a good point re: using proxy instead of VPN, could be that using a proxy isn't 100% full-proof.
Either BTGuard is in fact logging your data (unlikely? I dunno). Or, more likely, using a SOCKS proxy w/ torrents is a bad idea. Offhand I'd suggest sticking to VPN when torrenting. Not sure on the details but your real IP address may be leaking if you're using just a proxy.
Jun 23, 2015 · BTGuard is a bit different. Their main service is a BitTorrent proxy, not a VPN. The main difference is that a BitTorrent proxy is meant to only run your torrent traffic through the anonymization service, while leaving all your other traffic unprotected.
BTGuard VPN offers two separate plans. These can be paid for monthly or yearly (with a 25% price reduction for paying annually). I checked it several times. What worked for me was that I unloaded EVERYTHING that had to do with uTorrent, ran CCleaner to get rid of anything in windows registry, and reloaded stable (not beta).
